Communities and Cannabis is a series of events hosted by Roc NORML where locals discuss the positive consequences of legalizing of marijuana and other pressing issues and questions. Event number two is happening on Tuesday, October 15 at 6 p.m.
The first Communities and Cannabis event was held at Brue Coffee on Thursday, September 26. Supporters of OWN Rochester, NY Hemp Lab, and Roc NORML talked about their roles in forming “Communities & Cannabis.” An explanation of the brief history of marijuana prohibition was discussed. Guests also shared information about the function of medical marijuana and hemp programs, and the future possibilities of legalizing and regulating marijuana for adult-use in New York.
There was a particular focus on how to grow and thrive in ways that benefit our communities, especially Black communities, which have been disproportionately impacted by marijuana prohibition. Several questions came from the first event including:
What are some of the key differences between Governor Cuomo’s proposed legislation and the legislation you’re trying to pass?
How are we going to make sure after we legalize, we don’t hyper criminalize folks who stay in the unregulated market?
How are folks records going to be automatically expunged? It sounds good in theory, but how is this actually going to happen and how are we going to make sure the state is doing what they say they are going to do?
How do we involve the voices of folks from communities which have disproportionately impacted by marijuana prohibition, so they’re involved in deciding how money is reinvested back into their communities?
What have we learned from Canada and other states that have legalized before us?
ROCNRML invites the Rochester community to attend Communities and Cannabis Tuesday, October 15 at 6 p.m. at the Southeast Quadrant Neighborhood Service Center, 320 Goodman St N, Rochester, NY 14607. The event is free but space is limited. Reserve your seat by searching “Communities and Cannabis” on EventBrite or copy and paste this link in your address bar:
