The Batavia Ciy Council had many items on Monday night’s agenda including appointing a new Fair Housing Officer and giving the city manager the “flexibility when determining wage step increments,” but it was the idea of a letter to Governor Cuomo that drew 150 people to the meeting.
Over a hundred people in the crowd wanted the council to write and send a letter in opposition to Cuomo’s Reproductive Health Act, an abortion rights bill.
More than two dozen others, many backing Planned Parenthood, argued it was not the city council’s place to take a position on abortion.
According to several in attendance, the council did not make clear its position, but did agree to take up the issue at its next meeting.
