Haiden Laguaras, an 8-year-old girl from Hilton is helping kids stand up to bullying. She has been selling keychains with uplifting messages, and the movement has gone viral.

Haiden was getting bullied at school and wanted something to make her feel better. She wanted something she could carry that wouldn’t stand out too much, just something she could look at.

Her mom helped her come up with the idea of keychains with self-positive messages. Originally, she just posted about it on Facebook because she bought a keychain kit that made 43 keychains and wanted to give the rest to people they knew. But the post went viral and started reaching people as far as North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

Now Haiden and her family have made over 250 keychains- and counting. They have an assembly line system to get the whole family involved. The keychains say things like “gentle friend”, “sweet laugh”, and “secret beauty.”

The project has made Haiden feel better and she said she hopes it helps other kids being bullied too.

“They want to pick on you so you feel down and just make a joke out of it, it’s fine- they don’t know what they’re saying. They’re just jealous of who you are and it shows their true character and their true self,” Haiden said.

The money goes to a good cause. Half the profit from each keychain goes to the Makenna Dadey benefit, which honors a local girl who took her own life back in 2017 after being bullied.

To purchase a keychain, you can email Haiden’s mom, Brittany Alves, at brittanyalves1@gmail.com.
